Ocean Technology Forum in Taiwan addresses maritime security

The 2026 Ocean Technology Industry Forum opened in Taiwan, bringing together experts from 14 countries to discuss maritime security, sustainability, and smart ocean technologies. The forum focuses on addressing geopolitical challenges, specifically the ‘grey zone’ tactics used to alter regional statuses through maritime incursions.

Key discussions centered on enhancing maritime domain awareness to counter threats to shipping and supply chains. Officials emphasized the need for advanced technologies, such as AI-driven risk prediction and underwater infrastructure protection, to ensure freedom of navigation.

Technological advancements were a major highlight, including the presentation of a new multi-orbit satellite ultra-broadband communication solution. Developed through a partnership between industry and National Cheng Kung University, this system integrates low-earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary (GEO) satellite resources, alongside 4G and 5G networks, to provide resilient, uninterrupted communication for maritime law enforcement and search-and-rescue operations in harsh environments.
