Ocean warming and coral reef threats drive new research initiatives
Rising ocean temperatures and phenomena such as El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are threatening marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and fish stocks. In Mauritius, scientists are monitoring these shifts due to their potential impact on food security, biodiversity, and the maritime economy.
To combat these environmental threats, Phil Schiller and Kim Gassett-Schiller have donated $25 million to establish the WHOI Schiller Center for Reef Solutions at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The center will utilize robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous vehicles to develop scalable solutions for protecting and restoring coral ecosystems.
Global ocean temperatures have reached record highs, with recent data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service indicating unprecedented warmth. These changes pose risks not only to shallow tropical reefs but also to deep-water coral species, which are highly vulnerable to shifts in temperature and acidity.
