Ocean Winds faces fisherman opposition over Incheon wind project

Ocean Winds (OW) is facing ongoing opposition from local fishermen regarding its proposed offshore wind farm project in the waters near Incheon. During a recent public hearing for the environmental impact assessment, residents and fishery representatives expressed concerns that the development in Block 152 would destroy vital blue crab fishing grounds.

Fishermen argued that while they previously accommodated projects in nearby Block 153, they cannot support further development without the provision of alternative fishing grounds. They noted that the area provides approximately 500 tons of blue crab annually for domestic and international markets. Concerns were also raised regarding potential damage to subsea power cables and reduced production at Sorae Pogu.

The project aims to establish a 1,125 MW wind farm using 75 turbines, with construction targeted for 2032. Ocean Winds stated it plans to implement noise reduction measures, such as bubble curtains, and conduct monitoring to mitigate ecological impacts and develop compensation plans through continuous communication with the community.
