Search operations are underway in the Bay of Bengal for 22 missing crew members after the Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner sank on August 22. The vessel was transporting approximately 71,000 to 72,000 tonnes of iron ore from Paradip Port, India, to Singapore.

Of the 24 crew members on board—comprising 20 Chinese, 3 Burmese, and 1 Bangladeshi national—only two Chinese nationals have been rescued so far. On August 25, rescue teams located an empty lifeboat and an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) approximately 290 nautical miles off the coast of Paradip, though no survivors were found in the lifeboat.

The search is a coordinated effort involving the Indian Coast Guard, the Indian Navy, and two Chinese vessels. The Chinese Embassy in India and the Fujian Maritime Bureau are also involved in coordinating rescue efforts. The cause of the sinking remains unknown, though some reports suggest the possibility of cargo liquefaction.
