Oceania nations advance renewable energy and electrification plans

Pacific Island nations are advancing distinct renewable energy strategies to enhance energy security and climate resilience. At the Oceania Renewable Power Summit 2026 in Auckland, Samoa presented development plans focused on reducing dependence on imported fuels. The Samoan government is prioritizing solar power generation, battery energy storage, and electricity grid modernization to improve power reliability and accommodate renewable sources.

In Fiji, the government is emphasizing the need for universal electricity access by 2030. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted that the energy transition must reach remote and outer-island communities through decentralized mini-grids and off-grid solutions. Fiji aims for 100 percent renewable grid-connected electricity by 2035, contingent on international support, with a goal to reduce energy sector emissions by 36 percent by 2035.
