Oceanloop to develop giant grouper farm in Arinaga
German company Oceanloop is developing a large-scale industrial aquaculture project in Arinaga, Gran Canaria. Originally intended for land-based shrimp production, the project has been reoriented to focus on the production of giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus), a species that is rarely produced commercially in Europe.
The facility will utilize Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology. The project is planned to be implemented in phases, with the first stage aiming for an annual production of approximately 1,000 tons of giant grouper. The company also intends to include its own hatchery to control the biological cycle and reduce reliance on external suppliers, with a long-term goal of reaching a total capacity of 2,000 tons per year. The European Investment Bank has identified the Arinaga area as a site for economic activity and employment generation related to the supply chain.
