Ochanomizu University leads ranking of female faculty in Japanese national universities

A new ranking of 85 Japanese national universities has revealed the institutions with the highest proportions of female faculty members. Ochanomizu University ranked first with a ratio of 46.2%, maintaining a consistent presence in the 40% range over the last decade through various support systems for female researchers.

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies followed in second place at 44.1%, marking a significant increase from 36.3% in 2015. Nara Women's University took third place with 40.7%. Other notable institutions in the top five include Tokyo University of the Arts (35.7%) and Tokyo Gakugei University (33.7%).

The overall female faculty ratio across all surveyed national universities stands at 20.7%. This data follows the National University Association's recent action plan, which aims to increase the female faculty ratio in national universities to over 30% by 2030, aligning with government goals to reach a 23% target for professors and higher-ranking positions by the same year.
