Ochtrup crematorium construction faces new legal appeal

The legal dispute regarding the construction of a new crematorium in Ochtrup, located in the Steinfurt district, has entered a new phase. Following a ruling by the Münster Administrative Court that upheld the validity of the building permit, a plaintiff has filed an application to allow an appeal to the Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The conflict involves a neighboring company and a local resident who have sought to block the project for years. The neighboring business expressed concerns that it might have to restrict its production to avoid disturbing the crematorium's operations. However, the court previously determined that fears regarding noise interference for crematorium employees were unfounded, noting that noise levels from production trucks remain well below permitted limits.

The planned facility is intended solely for cremation and will not include a funeral hall for mourners; funeral homes will manage the transport of remains and urns. Previously, the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig ruled that the development plan was correctly established, and the city maintained that the site selection provides sufficient visual and spatial separation from the industrial area.
