OCP and CHS to invest $450M in Louisiana phosphate plant
OCP North America and the American agricultural cooperative CHS Inc. have announced a joint plan to invest up to $450 million in a new phosphate fertilizer production facility in Louisiana. Located at the Cornerstone Energy Park in Waggaman, the plant is expected to have an annual capacity exceeding one million tonnes.
This project marks the first construction of a phosphate fertilizer plant in the United States since 1984. The partnership aims to bolster U.S. food security and reduce reliance on imports, as the United States currently imports approximately 40% of its required phosphate fertilizers. The OCP Group will supply the necessary phosphoric acid, while the finished products will be distributed through the networks of both OCP North America and CHS.
The companies have applied for potential funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FIELDS program. The initiative is intended to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities caused by geopolitical tensions and market disruptions.
