Octolarvae releases juvenile spider crabs to regenerate Cíes Islands

In Spain, the aquaculture firm Octolarvae, a subsidiary of Profand, has released 666 juvenile spider crabs into the Cíes Islands to help regenerate local marine ecosystems. This initiative is part of the Acuiregal project, a joint effort involving the CSIC and the IIM.

The process involved collecting wild spider crabs from the Vigo estuary and transporting them to a facility in Moaña. In a controlled environment, the crabs were allowed to reproduce, with larvae being fed until they reached the juvenile stage. This release marks a significant milestone for the company, which has released over 600,000 larvae and juveniles into the wild within a single year.
