Octopus fishing drives economic growth and sustainability in Mexico and Venezuela

International Octopus Day highlights the economic and cultural importance of octopus fishing in Latin American coastal communities.

In Mexico, the octopus fishery has become a significant economic driver, generating over 3.3 billion pesos in value last year, a 57 percent increase compared to 2024. National production reached 40,710 tons, with Yucatán leading production followed by Campeche and Baja California Sur. The industry supports 7,279 direct jobs through more than 1,500 permitted vessels. Authorities emphasize adherence to official standards to ensure the conservation of the five local species, including the endemic Maya octopus.

In Venezuela, octopus harvesting is a strategic component of the ‘Blue Venezuela’ initiative, which focuses on the responsible management of aquatic spaces and the protection of marine biodiversity. Artisanal fishers utilize selective fishing methods to maintain biological equilibrium. The sector is recognized for its high nutritional value and its role in driving the socioeconomic development of island and eastern coastal communities.
