OCU reports 35% increase in grocery prices over three years

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) reports that grocery prices in Spain have increased by approximately 35% over the last three years. This cumulative rise means that a 50-euro budget, which previously covered a substantial amount of goods, is no longer sufficient to fill a shopping cart with basic necessities.

The price hikes are particularly evident in fresh products, including oil, fish, meat, and fruit. As these essential items become more expensive, consumers are increasingly forced to adjust their shopping habits to manage household budgets. Common strategies include comparing prices between supermarkets, opting for white-label brands, tracking offers, and substituting more expensive items with cheaper alternatives.

There are growing concerns regarding the nutritional impact of these rising costs. As fresh foods like fruit and fish become more expensive, they risk being removed from regular shopping lists, potentially turning a varied and healthy diet into a luxury for many families.
