Ocugen stock drops following negative interim Stargardt disease trial data
Ocugen is facing market volatility following an interim analysis of its OCU410ST gene therapy study for Stargardt disease. Data from the first 26 participants indicated a negative treatment effect, causing the company's stock to drop approximately 21 percent within a week, approaching a 52-week low.
Despite the interim results, the independent data monitoring committee has recommended continuing the study for another eight months, stating that the current data set is insufficient to reach a definitive conclusion.
Ocugen continues to advance three gene therapy programs—OCU400, OCU410ST, and OCU410—targeting ophthalmological needs. While market skepticism remains due to the high capital requirements and commercialization challenges of gene therapies, the company is working toward pivotal trial catalysts, including Phase 3 data expected in 2027.
