ODECU proposes consumer protections for interest capitalization
In Chile, the Organization of Consumers and Users (ODECU) has proposed a regulatory change regarding anatocism, which is the practice of adding unpaid interest to the principal amount of a debt. Currently, Chilean legislation presumes this capitalization unless otherwise agreed upon. ODECU suggests that in consumer relations, anatocism should not operate automatically but should instead require express, informed, and separate consent from the consumer to ensure they understand the economic impact on their debt.
In Argentina, the Province of Córdoba has fulfilled its international debt obligations. The province completed the twelfth interest payment for its Step Up International Debt Titles due in 2029, totaling approximately USD 15.68 million. Additionally, it made the first interest payment on its 2035 International Debt Titles, amounting to USD 34.4 million. These funds were originally issued to finance infrastructure projects and strategic works.
