Odesa considers ban on Russian language in arts and public spaces

The Odesa city council is preparing to vote on a controversial proposal to ban the Russian language within the arts and public cultural spheres. If approved, the measure would prohibit Russian-language music, literature, and performances in public spaces, including streets, parks, and state-run entertainment venues.

The proposal also suggests that Russian-language books be removed from prominent display in public libraries. While the ban focuses on public and state-run spaces, it includes a recommendation for private businesses, such as cafes and independent theaters, to adopt similar restrictions.

The debate has highlighted deep cultural divisions in the historically Russian-speaking city. Proponents, including lawyer Artem Kartashov, argue that the language is being used as a tool of Russian influence to undermine Ukrainian identity. Conversely, local figures like comedian Borys Barsky warn that the ban could fracture social unity and ignore the city's complex cultural heritage.
