Odido data breach: Police release suspect's voice to aid investigation

Dutch police have released an audio recording of a suspect's voice on the television program ‘Opsporing Verzocht’ in an attempt to identify those responsible for a massive cyberattack on telecom provider Odido. The breach, which occurred earlier this year, resulted in the theft of personal data belonging to more than six million customers, including birth dates, bank account numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses.

The attackers gained access by using social engineering techniques, posing as IT staff to trick a customer service employee into logging into a fraudulent phishing site. Following the breach, the hacking group ShinyHunters demanded a ransom of one million euros. After Odido refused to pay, the stolen data was published on the dark web, leading to a surge in phishing attempts targeting the victims.

Investigators have confirmed that the voice in the recording is a real human voice and not an AI-generated imitation. Police noted that the caller used English IT jargon and spoke Dutch, suggesting professional experience. Authorities previously indicated they had strong suspicions that Dutch criminals were involved in the incident.
