Odisha BJD challenges state government's nuclear plant plan and investment claims

The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha has publicly opposed a proposal by a private company to build a 3,000 MW nuclear power plant in the state, warning that the project would threaten public health and safety. BJD leaders argue that Odisha already generates more electricity than it consumes and that nuclear projects should remain under government control. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the proposal, saying nuclear facilities have operated safely in other Indian states and that the plant would not endanger residents.

At the same time, the BJD has questioned the Odisha government’s investment promotion efforts, alleging that a series of investor roadshows in India and abroad have not resulted in any substantial projects. The party points to low foreign‑direct investment figures and the lack of concrete follow‑through on signed memoranda of understanding, claiming the government’s investment claims are largely rhetorical.
