Odisha and Bihar face severe flooding as Hirakud Dam opens sluice gates

Severe monsoon flooding has impacted multiple regions in India, particularly in the states of Odisha and Bihar. In Odisha, the Mahanadi River system is facing significant pressure as authorities at the Hirakud Dam have increased the number of open sluice gates to as many as 30 to manage surging inflows. This has triggered high alerts in coastal districts such as Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapara. The government has evacuated approximately 140,000 people from low-lying villages and urban wards to relief shelters.

In southern Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conducted aerial surveys of Ganjam, Koraput, and Nabarangpur to assess agricultural damage and structural destruction. Landslides have also forced the indefinite closure of the Kalinga Ghati mountain pass.

In Bihar, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary surveyed flood-affected areas in East Champaran and Gopalganj. The Gandak River has risen above the danger mark, prompting officials to prepare for potential evacuations and establish relief camps to assist residents in vulnerable blocks.
