Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi seeks UNESCO heritage tag for Puri Rath Yatra

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi wrote to Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat requesting central support to nominate the Puri Rath Yatra for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has already submitted all required documents in the prescribed format. Majhi described the centuries‑old Rath Yatra as a civilisational tradition that showcases India’s cultural diversity, spirituality, craftsmanship, music, dance and mass participation, drawing millions of devotees and tourists each year. He said UNESCO inscription would enhance global recognition and help preserve the festival for future generations.
