Odisha Congress mobilizes against mining laws and BJP rule

The Congress party in Odisha is intensifying its political activity, driven by opposition to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act 2026. This legislation, passed by Parliament, prevents state governments from independently levying taxes or duties on mineral rights, placing them under central regulatory control. In response, the INDIA bloc held a ‘Parivartan Rally’ in Bhubaneswar and organized a 12-hour bandh that disrupted transport and mining activities.

During a recent meeting of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), leaders resolved to contest upcoming Panchayat elections with a united front. The party’s strategy includes door-to-door campaigning to explain the MMDR Act amendments to households and demanding OBC reservation in the local polls. Additionally, party members have criticized proposed central data center projects in the state, alleging they prioritize corporate interests over local needs.
