Odisha Court Considers Premature Release of Convicted Murderer Dara Singh

The Supreme Court of India ordered on 14 July that the Odisha government decide within a month on a remission plea filed by Rabindra Kumar Pal, also known as Dara Singh. Singh, now 63, has been serving three life sentences for the 1999 murders of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons, a Muslim garment trader, and a Catholic priest. He seeks early release, claiming repentance and a desire to serve society, and the Odisha State Sentence Review Board has recommended his release on the basis of good behaviour.

The hearing on the remission request is scheduled for 19 August. Odisha units of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI(M) have publicly opposed any move to grant Singh premature release, warning that it would undermine public confidence in the justice system and threaten communal harmony. The parties cited recent increases in caste and communal violence in the state and referenced the revocation of remission in the Bilkis Bano case as a precedent.

The case highlights ongoing tension between calls for leniency based on rehabilitation and concerns over the potential impact on law‑order and secular values in Odisha.
