Odisha explores establishing a satellite launch centre
The Odisha government is exploring the establishment of a satellite launch centre within the state. Science and Technology Minister Krushna Chandra Patra confirmed that preliminary discussions have been held with the central government, including meetings with Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy and Space Science Jitendra Singh, regarding the proposal.
To bolster the state’s scientific infrastructure, the government also plans to construct a Science Bhavan, a new building for the Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC), and a Geographic Information System (GIS) laboratory.
Minister Patra noted that ORSAC currently utilizes satellite-derived data to manage agricultural land, groundwater, and mineral resources, which has assisted in resource management and reduced public expenditure. Additionally, the minister highlighted the rising role of Odisha-based startups, noting that drones and equipment produced by local firms are being utilized in India’s defence sector.
