Odisha files Supreme Court contempt petition against Andhra Pradesh
The Odisha government has filed a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court against Andhra Pradesh regarding a boundary dispute in the Kotia region of Koraput district. The legal action follows an October 10 notification by the Andhra Pradesh government to conduct Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in several villages within the disputed cluster.
Odisha officials allege that Andhra Pradesh’s decision to hold local body polls violates a 2006 Supreme Court order that directed both states to maintain the status quo in the region. While all 28 villages under the Kotia Gram Panchayat are considered part of Odisha territory, Andhra Pradesh claims rights over 21 of those villages.
The petition, approved by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, names the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner, chief secretary, and relevant district officials as parties to the matter. Odisha intends to seek a court directive to prevent Andhra Pradesh from conducting further election activities in the area. The state also plans to deploy revenue and police personnel to monitor the situation and development progress on the ground.
