Odisha floods show signs of improvement as river levels recede
Flood conditions in Odisha are showing signs of improvement as water levels in several major rivers begin to recede. According to Special Relief Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, the situation in districts such as Jajpur and Bhadrak has improved significantly following a reduction in rainfall over the last 24 hours.
Despite the receding waters, the impact remains widespread. More than 12.87 lakh people have been affected across the region, with approximately 4.49 lakh residents evacuated to 812 relief shelters. The deluge has impacted 1,671 villages and 75 blocks, causing damage to infrastructure including 103 roads and bridges, as well as thousands of tubewells and electricity connections.
The Subarnarekha River reached its peak around 3 am after receiving water released from Jharkhand. While the Brahmani, Baitarani, and Budhabalanga rivers have seen water levels drop below danger marks, authorities continue to monitor low-lying areas in Baleshwar and Jaleswar closely. Relief operations are ongoing, with 179 response teams deployed to manage rescue, food distribution, and medical assistance.
