Odisha forms commission to assess SEBC representation in local bodies

The Odisha government has established a high-level commission to evaluate the population and political representation of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBCs) within local self-government institutions. The study will encompass both rural and urban bodies, including panchayats.

Retired Orissa High Court judge Justice Pramath Pattanaik will chair the commission. The panel also includes retired IAS officer Bijaya Kumar Prusti as a member and Sujata Mishra, Special Secretary of the ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department, as member secretary.

The commission is tasked with examining the proportion of the SEBC population relative to the total population in local governance and assessing the extent of their political backwardness. This initiative follows a decision by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to conduct a comprehensive study of the socio-political status of these communities to ensure adequate representation and safeguard their interests.
