Odisha electoral updates and political protests intensify
The Odisha State Election Commission (SEC) and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) have initiated several measures to update electoral rolls. The CEO launched a three-day special campaign from October 7 to 9 to enroll eligible young voters and those previously omitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026. Simultaneously, the SEC has begun preparations for the 2027 Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections, including a house-to-house voter survey scheduled to start on October 26.
Political tensions have risen as the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) joined an opposition protest march in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The BJD alleges irregularities regarding the modification of Form 6 and has raised concerns about potential EVM tampering during the 2024 elections. The party maintains it is acting as an independent regional entity, despite its participation in the protest.
In administrative news, the Odisha government has implemented strict fiscal guidelines for the upcoming supplementary budget. Departments that have utilized less than 40 per cent of their current budget allocations will be barred from receiving additional funds, a move intended to enforce financial discipline and curb underutilization.
