Odisha State to Distribute Corrected School Textbooks After Review

More than 1,600 errors — ranging from spelling mistakes to incorrect names of eminent personalities — were reported in the newly introduced class 1‑8 textbooks in Odisha, prompting criticism of the BJP‑led state government.

The School and Mass Education Department, headed by Secretary N. Thirumala Naik, said the actual number of mistakes is lower than the media claims. A high‑level committee was formed to investigate how the errors occurred, leading to the suspension of several officials. The department is reviewing the content with educationists, subject‑experts and editorial teams.

Revised, error‑free textbooks will be uploaded on the department’s and OSEPA’s websites for public feedback before final printing. Until the new books reach schools, corrected sheets will be provided to teachers to ensure uninterrupted classroom instruction.
