Odisha heritage monuments: Only 294 of 3,000+ sites hold protected status

Odisha is home to more than 3,000 identified temples and archaeological monuments, but only 294 sites currently hold protected status from state or central governments. This information was presented to the Assembly on Friday.

Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj stated that the State Archaeology Department protects 212 monuments, while the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protects 82.

For the current financial year, the State Archaeology Department has earmarked ₹7 crore specifically for the conservation and maintenance of protected monuments. An additional ₹13 crore has been allocated for the upkeep of both protected and unprotected heritage structures across the state. The minister also addressed concerns regarding fund usage, asserting that allocated resources are actively being used for restoration and maintenance works.
