Odisha implements tobacco-free zone in Bhubaneswar amid shifting consumption trends

The Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar has been officially declared a ‘Tobacco-Free Zone’. The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department issued a notification prohibiting smoking, tobacco consumption, and spitting within the premises. Violators face legal penalties. Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling stated the move aims to promote a healthy environment and aligns with national health initiatives.

According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) for 2023-24, tobacco and alcohol consumption among individuals aged 15 and older has generally declined across Odisha compared to the 2019-21 period. State-wide, female tobacco use dropped from 26.1% to 22.8%, and male use fell from 51.7% to 48.3%. Alcohol consumption also saw a reduction across the state.

However, the survey highlighted regional disparities. In the Malkangiri district, tobacco consumption increased among both men and women. Similarly, districts such as Kandhamal and Rayagada showed rising trends in tobacco and alcohol use, indicating that while state-level statistics are improving, certain tribal and southern districts face ongoing challenges.
