Odisha imposes fishing ban in Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary

The Odisha government has implemented a seven-month fishing ban in the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary to protect endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles during their annual mass-nesting season. The restriction, effective from November 1, 2026, to May 31, 2027, covers a prohibited zone extending 20 km into the sea from the coastline between the Dhamra and Mahanadi river mouths.

Gahirmatha is recognized as the world’s largest rookery for these turtles, which travel from regions including Sri Lanka and the Pacific Ocean to participate in the mass-nesting phenomenon known as ‘Arribada’. The ban aims to prevent turtles from becoming entangled in fishing nets, a major threat to their survival.

To enforce the regulation, the Forest Department is increasing surveillance through boat patrolling and the establishment of protection camps at the Madeli river mouth and Babubali. Authorities will coordinate with the Indian Coast Guard, Marine Police, and the Fisheries Department, while also launching awareness campaigns to secure cooperation from local fishing communities.
