Odisha, India Faces Intense Thunderstorms and Monsoon Rain Across State

India's Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the southwest monsoon has now covered all 30 districts of Odisha as of June 23, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms. A trough extending from Bihar to the Bay of Bengal is driving lightning, gusty surface winds up to 50 km/h and heavy rainfall, with a yellow warning issued for Cuttack, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati and Nayagarh districts. The IMD has advised fishermen to stay off the sea until June 24 due to rough to very rough conditions.

Forecasts indicate that thunderstorm activity will continue through June 27, affecting numerous districts with lightning, gusty winds of 30‑50 km/h and intermittent heavy rain. Additional heavy rain may resume on June 30‑July 1 in districts such as Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kendhujhar, Mayurbhanj and others, with no major changes expected thereafter.
