Odisha invests in power grid modernization and small hydro expansion

The Government of Odisha is advancing its clean energy and electrical infrastructure through significant investments in small hydro power and grid modernization. To support the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s Small Hydro Power Development Scheme, the state is working to convert national policy into an investment-ready pipeline. Odisha aims to leverage its significant surface water resources to diversify its energy portfolio beyond thermal power.

Additionally, the state has approved an investment of approximately ₹15,948.70 crore under the Mukhya Mantri Shakti Bikash Yojana to modernize its power transmission network. This initiative includes the development of the state’s first 765 kV transmission network and the establishment of several new substations at Khuntuni, Duburi, and Kolabira.

The upgrades are designed to meet rising industrial demand and facilitate the integration of renewable energy, such as floating solar projects on the Hirakud and Indravati reservoirs. The Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (OPTCL) also plans to implement artificial intelligence-based systems for predictive maintenance and transmission management.
