Odisha to hold student union elections on October 15

Odisha is set to resume student union elections on October 15, 2026, marking the return of campus polls after an eight-year hiatus. The Higher Education Department has released an official schedule, with notifications due on October 7, nominations on October 9, and polling to take place on October 15. To ensure fair conduct, the state has implemented a strict code of conduct that prohibits the use of AI-generated deepfakes, misinformation, and personal attacks during digital campaigning.

Security officials, including DGP Vinaytosh Mishra and IG Satyajit Nayak, have directed police to implement comprehensive measures to maintain peace. Instructions include monitoring college campuses to prevent the entry of outsiders, maintaining surveillance around hostels, and ensuring heightened vigilance following the announcement of results. Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj has urged students to participate in this democratic process without resorting to violence.

In a separate electoral effort, the Chief Electoral Officer of Odisha will conduct a special three-day voter enrolment campaign from October 7 to 9. This initiative aims to include eligible voters who were omitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026 and to register newly eligible young voters who have turned 18. The campaign will allow citizens to verify electoral lists and submit claims or objections regarding incorrect exclusions.
