Odisha protests disrupt mining and commerce over MMDR Amendment Act
Political protests in Odisha have caused significant disruptions across the state, primarily targeting the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) conducted a 12-hour economic blockade in the Sundargarh district, specifically targeting coal mining areas operated by MCL, OCPL, NTPC, and Vedanta. BJD leaders argued the amendment threatens the state’s authority over mineral resources and demanded protection for revenue and royalties generated from these assets.
Simultaneously, the Congress-led INDIA bloc observed a 12-hour bandh across various districts, including Angul, Puri, and Sambalpur. In addition to opposing the MMDR Amendment Act, the bloc demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the School and Mass Education minister, as well as relief for flood victims.
The protests impacted coal production at eight mines in the Talcher coalfield and affected transportation by road and rail. While most public sector units like NALCO and NTPC continued operations, some clashes were reported in Nabarangpur between protesters and shopkeepers, resulting in injuries and police detentions.
