Odisha revises error‑riddled school textbooks after political outcry

In Odisha, hundreds of factual and typographical errors were discovered in newly printed textbooks for classes I‑VIII, prompting widespread criticism. The state government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, formed a three‑member committee that identified around 1,600‑1,700 mistakes and recommended 14 corrective measures.

School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond announced that revised copies with corrections will be distributed to schools this academic session. Four officials, including a former SCERT director, have been suspended, and disciplinary proceedings have begun against six others. The department will publish an errata register, provide correction sheets to students, and establish a Textbook Quality Assurance Cell to prevent future lapses. Opposition parties have demanded the resignation of the minister and a CBI probe into alleged corruption worth nearly ₹380 crore.
