Odisha seeks central support to improve paddy procurement and food security
Odisha officials are coordinating with the central government to strengthen paddy procurement and foodgrain management. Odisha's Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, met with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi to address critical issues including the expedited lifting of Custom Milled Rice (CMR) by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), pending subsidy claims, and the revision of custody and maintenance charges.
In Western Odisha, local MLAs have raised concerns regarding difficulties farmers face during the Kharif paddy procurement process, specifically regarding registration and sales. In response, Minister Patra assured that the government is implementing measures to simplify the process, including the development of a new application for landowners and sharecroppers that utilizes facial authentication for registration.
The collaborative efforts between the Centre and the state aim to improve storage infrastructure, ensure smooth evacuation of rice, and strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) to better serve beneficiaries and protect farmers' interests.
