Odisha teachers overcome disabilities and geographic barriers to reach students

In Odisha, India, several educators are gaining recognition for their extraordinary dedication to teaching in challenging circumstances.

Kailash Chandra Sahu, a visually impaired teacher at Kudutai Upper Primary School in the Ganjam district, has utilized Braille and innovative teaching methods to support his students since 2011. Despite his visual impairment and financial hardships, he remains committed to helping children overcome poverty and disability.

In the Nabarangpur district, teachers Rotiot Harijan and Ajit Kumar Khura undertake a perilous daily commute to reach their students. The pair uses a boat they purchased themselves to cross the Indravati reservoir before walking several kilometers to reach their respective government primary schools. Their commitment ensures that students in remote areas do not face disruptions in their education despite the risks posed by weather and rising water levels.
