ODS faces internal tension ahead of municipal elections

Internal tensions are rising within the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) ahead of upcoming senate and municipal elections. The party is facing criticism from within regarding its decision to run under various coalition names—such as ‘Spolu pro Prahu’ in Prague or ‘Srdcova’ in Ostrava—rather than the ODS brand. Younger members, including MP Štěpán Slovák, have argued that the party must strengthen its own identity to ensure long-term survival.

Party leader Martin Kupka has defended these strategies, noting that municipal politics often rely on established local alliances and individual personalities. However, the party is also grappling with unfavorable pre-election polls. Recent data suggests that the STAN movement may be overtaking ODS as the strongest opposition force.

There is significant anxiety regarding the potential impact of election results on Kupka’s leadership. Some party members have expressed concern that poor performance, particularly in Prague, could trigger a leadership challenge.
