ODS faces leadership changes in Brno and internal split in Plzeň
The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) is facing leadership changes and internal friction in several Czech regions. In Brno, Robert Kerndl has resigned as chairman of the Brno-city regional organization. Kerndl, who has been a deputy mayor since 2018, stated that his decision follows his earlier announcement that he would not run in the upcoming municipal elections. He noted that he wishes to make room for younger personalities within the party leadership.
In Plzeň, tensions have escalated within the Plzeň-Slovany local association. Following municipal elections, the eight-member ODS council split evenly, with four members joining the local coalition and four choosing to remain in opposition. In response, former Minister of Culture Martin Baxa announced that the party has issued a “yellow card” to the local organization, giving them one week to rectify the situation or face potential dissolution. Amidst this conflict, long-time member and former senator Lumír Aschenbrenner has ended his 35-year membership in the party.
