Odysseus' Crew Deaths Mapped in New Interactive Chart

A newly compiled chart visualizes the gradual loss of Odysseus’s crew throughout Homer’s Odyssey. The author estimates the original crew size based on the twelve ships described in the epic, using typical ancient vessel complements of 50‑120 men, and arrives at roughly 52 sailors per ship. The chart tracks each fatal incident, from the Cyclops Polyphemus devouring men to Elpenor’s accidental fall from Circe’s roof, and assigns approximate dates by weighting the time spent on Calypso’s and Circe’s islands.

The visualisation draws on multiple literary sources, incorporates feedback from associate professor Greta Hawes of Macquarie University, and links to related datavis projects on deaths in the Iliad and a catalogue of ships. It offers readers a quantitative view of a classic work of literature, showing how every member of the crew meets a grim end before only Odysseus remains.
