OECD PISA 2025 assessment emphasizes science and media literacy

The OECD's PISA 2025 assessment cycle has placed a specific emphasis on science as its primary domain. This focus aims to address the economic necessity of training future scientists and to equip citizens with the ability to evaluate scientific information, distinguish reliable data from misinformation, and make informed decisions regarding global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss.

In Ecuador, the 2025 PISA results represent the country's first participation in the main study. Ecuador scored 385 points in reading, significantly below the OECD average of 461. The findings highlight an urgent need for media and information literacy (MIL) to help students navigate digital environments.

Additionally, the OECD noted associations between technology use and academic performance. While intensive chatbot use for schoolwork was linked to lower science scores, students who practiced evaluating the quality of AI-generated information tended to achieve slightly higher scores. Experts suggest that integrating media literacy into national education plans and teacher training is essential for developing informed citizens.
