France student protests escalate over education funding and police conduct

France is experiencing widespread student and youth-led protests over education funding, deteriorating school conditions, and austerity measures. Demonstrations have seen significant participation, with trade unions estimating up to 450,000 protesters, while the Ministry of the Interior has recorded over 6,600 arrests. The movement has led to the disruption of nearly 900 high schools and has occasionally escalated into urban unrest and clashes with law enforcement.

Reports of police violence have intensified the crisis. Authorities have suspended the use of stun grenades following an incident where a 15-year-old lost a hand. Investigations are underway regarding the use of force against minors. In response to the unrest, Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced an emergency plan to deploy 3,000 substitute teachers to critical and complex educational establishments.

The protests have also taken on a political dimension, with figures like Jean-Luc Mélenchon using the momentum to advocate for a Sixth Republic and the abolition of the Parcoursup admissions platform. The unrest has also seen solidarity movements in Belgium, where students have protested against similar educational budget cuts and austerity policies.
