OECD to launch mining wealth guidelines in Antofagasta
The OECD, in collaboration with the Regional Government and the Catholic University of the North, will launch 12 guidelines in Antofagasta designed to translate mining wealth into local well-being. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between economic growth and quality of life in mining regions.
OECD data indicates that while mining regions see higher GDP per capita and labor productivity compared to rural areas, they often suffer from lower diversification, innovation, and life expectancy, while remaining among the highest emitters of greenhouse gases. The proposed guidelines focus on three dimensions:
Economic: Diversifying beyond mining, expanding local labor opportunities, and linking SMEs with high-value activities.
Social: Strengthening community cohesion, improving access to services and housing, and integrating indigenous communities into local planning.
Environmental: Promoting low-emission mining, circular economy practices, and early mine closure planning.
In Mexico, Newmont Peñasquito, municipal authorities, and the Cedros community in Zacatecas have met to establish a collaborative framework for social projects aimed at addressing local population needs.
