OEFA conducts inspections of environmental infrastructure in Peru
The Environmental Evaluation and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) has conducted oversight activities regarding environmental infrastructure in Peru. In Trujillo, specialists inspected the Huanchaco sanitary landfill to evaluate operational conditions and contingency measures against heavy rains caused by the El Niño phenomenon. The technical team assessed waste disposal cells, drainage channels, and leachate management systems. A primary risk identified involves the potential impact of surface runoff and creek activation on the landfill access road, which could obstruct waste collection vehicles.
In Huaraz, the municipal slaughterhouse remains closed following new sanctions from OEFA due to persistent deficiencies in water and sewage systems. Despite the Provincial Municipality of Huaraz investing over 250,000 soles in maintenance and wastewater treatment improvements, the facility has not resolved the issues that led to its initial closure. Local officials have announced intentions to investigate the personnel responsible for the project due to the continued non-compliance.
