Portugal pushes flood defence, TV rights compensation and furniture waste licensing

The Oeiras municipality has presented a €63 million study to the Ministry of the Environment for a flood‑prevention project on the Algés river, aimed at mitigating future floods.

A recent analysis of television rights revenue shows that the funds have reduced the financial losses of Portuguese football clubs by €4.5 million, and proposes a compensation mechanism and a more balanced redistribution of broadcast income, with Marítimo advocating a middle‑ground model.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) announced that a licence for an integrated waste‑management system covering furniture and mattresses is expected in early November 2026. The Mobilão consortium – comprising Colunex, Electrão, Emma, IKEA Portugal and Leroy Merlin – has submitted the formal licensing request. APA noted that “o princípio da responsabilidade alargada do produtor determina que o operador económico que coloca o produto no mercado é responsável pelos impactos ambientais…”.
