German companies face insolvency and restructuring

Several German companies are facing significant restructuring or insolvency. The hardware chain Hellweg is being dismantled following its insolvency; while some individual stores or groups of locations have received takeover offers, no single investor has stepped forward to acquire the brand in its entirety. This process affects both Hellweg and BayWa Bau- & Garten-Märkte, with company headquarters in Dortmund and Garching scheduled for closure.

In the real estate sector, project developer Pandion AG has filed for insolvency in self-administration after failing to meet an interest payment on corporate bonds. The move affects five subsidiary companies and impacts projects involving approximately 3,800 apartments and 200,000 square meters of office space. Additionally, the housing cooperative Oekogeno is undergoing restructuring due to financial losses and rising interest rates, affecting roughly 16,000 members.

In the retail sector, the non-food discounter Mäc-Geiz is reviewing its network following insolvency, with approximately 50 of its 183 locations facing potential closure. Conversely, Gartencenter Augsburg has secured a rescue after its insolvency filing; the Sem family's investment company will take over the business on September 1, 2026, preserving all seven locations and 360 jobs.
