OeNB money museum opens gold exhibition before major renovation

The Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) has opened a special exhibition titled ‘Sternenstaub: Die Welt des Goldes’ (Stardust: The World of Gold) at its money museum in Vienna. Running from September 1, 2026, until June 25, 2027, the exhibition explores the history of gold through ten chapters, covering its origins in space, its use as jewelry, a medium of exchange, and a medical product.

This exhibition serves as the final showcase at the museum’s current location before a major renovation begins. OeNB Director Josef Meichenitsch stated that the museum will undergo modernization to expand its public areas to more than double their current size. The facility is expected to remain closed for renovations until early 2029.

The OeNB, one of Europe’s oldest central banks, currently holds 280 tons of gold as part of its currency reserves.
