Oeschinensee lake authorities consider entry fees to manage crowds
The municipality of Kandersteg is considering introducing an entry fee for the Oeschinensee, a popular mountain lake in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Located at approximately 1,575 meters above sea level within the UNESCO World Heritage site Jungfrau-Aletsch, the lake attracts massive crowds, with visitor numbers exceeding 7,000 on peak days.
Kandersteg's municipal president, René Maeder, noted that the influx of day trippers poses significant challenges for local infrastructure, including hiking trails, restroom facilities, and ranger services. Maeder stated that many day visitors contribute little to local economic value despite utilizing these resources.
Authorities are exploring various methods to manage visitor flow and distribute costs more equitably, including digital payment systems via apps or QR codes. The proposed fees would primarily affect those who reach the lake on foot, as an estimated 60 to 70 percent of visitors hike to the location. No final decision has been made regarding the implementation.
