Ofcom leadership to face UK parliamentary questioning

The UK House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is scheduled to hold an evidence session on October 20th with Ofcom leadership. Chair Sir Ian Cheshire and Chief Executive Dame Melanie Dawes are expected to face questioning regarding the implementation and enforcement of the Online Safety Act, as well as the regulator's ability to address emerging technologies like AI.

Key topics for the session include the proposed social media ban for children under 16, broadcasting impartiality, and the welfare of participants and crew in reality television. Additionally, the committee will likely examine Ofcom's role in media literacy and telecoms regulation.

This scrutiny follows recent legal challenges regarding Ofcom's jurisdiction. During testimony, Dame Melanie Dawes acknowledged limitations in enforcing penalties against foreign entities, noting that if foreign courts intervene, there may be instances where the regulator cannot recover funds. This follows developments in a case involving 4chan, where the limits of enforcing British judgments in U.S. courts due to constitutional protections have been highlighted.
