Ofcom maintains concerns over X’s handling of illegal content
The UK media regulator, Ofcom, has expressed ongoing concerns regarding X’s ability to effectively manage illegal hate speech and terrorism-related content. While X’s first quarterly performance report indicated the platform met agreed-upon targets for faster response times to reported content, Ofcom stated it remains skeptical of the overall effectiveness of the company’s removal processes.
The regulator’s investigation has entered a new phase to determine if X has fulfilled its legal obligations to protect users in Britain. This follows an investigation opened in January regarding the Grok AI chatbot, which was reportedly used to generate and share illegal sexualized images and deepfakes. Ofcom also noted that unverified users were previously able to access pornographic content, though X has since implemented system changes to block such material from minors.
Ofcom will continue to monitor X’s age-verification measures while focusing its remaining investigation on the platform’s reporting systems and its handling of illegal content.
